He Needs Me

I'm super excited about this song mainly because I'm a huge fan of the live-action Popeye movie. It was a VHS tape I'd play in my regular rotation of films. My cover takes an upbeat approach to this otherwise slow and dreamy tune. I think it's a lot more fun to play it my way.

'He Needs Me' was written by Harry Nilsson in 1980 and was released with the film in 1981.

You Love Me

First off, this one's dedicated to my very dear friend Bliss who requested I cover a little Devotchka. Both the lyrics and chords are simple, yet they have a tendency to grab hold of your imagination. This is a big reason why I'm a fan of Devotchka.

'You Love Me' was released on Devotchka's fourth album "How It Ends" in 2004. Enjoy :D

New Realization [EXPLICIT LYRICS]

While Sublime is known for taking songs apart and putting them back together with sampling and the like, 'New Realization' is an original number. It was first recorded in 1987 but was not released until 10 years later on the album "Second-Hand Smoke". It's one of my favorites to both play and listen to. Enjoy :D

Jenny the Vegan Penguin [Original]

In the summer of 2010, my husband Chaz and I moved to San Diego from a goat farm in North Carolina's Appalachian mountains. It was certainly a change of pace from what we were doing on the farm for 8 months, but it was there that I met the inspiration for this song. Jenny was also an intern at Mountain Farm who also happened to lean toward the vegan persuasion. This song is dedicated to her:

Jenny, you have always astounded me with your ability to diverge from the flock's path. Kudos.

There is no album for this song to be off of just yet. However, I do have roughly 8 songs in total written about animals that I've personified with people I know, a mixture of experiences with different friends and of course, a reflection of myself. I tentatively call this album "Animals" for lack of a better name. Keep an eye out for more original animal recordings.

When I'm Sixty Four

I figured it was about time for some Beatles :D

I find the ukulele to be an excellent instrument to play such a sweet song. The chord progression is light and fun, kind of like the ukulele itself. It was recorded by the Beatles on their 1967 album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

Diamond Dogs

In my opinion, this is one of the most underrated songs of all time. I absolutely adore it and love playing this track. It was recorded by David Bowie on his 1974 album entitled the same: "Diamond Dogs".

Sylvia's Mother

This song is a favorite of both my husband Chaz and I, as well as every person we've shown it to. I'd like to dedicate it to Margaret who requested I cover it. Enjoy :D

It's bittersweet and is actually an autobiographical song written by Shel Silverstein who drew upon his own experience with a failed relationship he tried to rekindle with one last unsuccessful phone call to his ex-love's mother.

This was Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show's first number one hit off of their 1972 self-titled album.

My Baby Just Cares for Me

This song is Nina Simone's signature tune, however, it was originally penned by Walter Donaldson with lyrics by Gus Kahn in 1930 for a movie entitled "Whoopee!" I do label this as a Nina Simone song as my inspiration comes from her recording.

If you happen to like my version, I highly recommend Nina Simone's recording. Her voice is absolutely immaculate and transforms this song's simple melody and lyrics into something indescribable. Such is the power of music :D

Eloise

This is dedicated to Sam who requested I cover this song. Enjoy :D

When Sam first requested this, I had never heard of the band Say Anything, so of course I had never heard the song 'Eloise'. In the original, the bridge is actually passionately spoken rather than sang. I don't do speaking over music. It makes me feel silly. So instead I had to breakdown the bridge using a different strum pattern and essentially work out a different melody for the lyrics. I omitted some words but not enough to structurally damage the song in its entirety nor the message being relayed to the listener.

Say Anything recorded 'Eloise' on their 2009 self-titled album.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World

First off, I'd like to dedicate this video to Chris who requested I cover this song. I hope you enjoy it!

This particular rendition of the two classic song medley was originally performed by the late Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole on his 1993 album "Facing Future".

'Over the Rainbow' is best known as the feature song in the movie "The Wizard of Oz". The music was originally composed by Harold Arlen with lyrics written by E.Y. Harburg.

'What a Wonderful World' was originally penned by Bob Thiele [under the pseudonym George Douglas] and George David Weiss.

Eye of Fatima

This is a cover of a cover of a cover. A cover to the third power, if you will. The original song was penned and performed by Camper Van Beethoven. The Ziggens then covered 'Eye of Fatima', which was then covered by Brad Nowell as heard on "Sublime Acoustic: Bradley Nowell and Friends".
